About isoflupredone acetate (the active ingredient)

Corticosteroid (glucocorticoid with mineralocorticoid activity).

How it works

Glucocorticoids bind receptors in the cell cytoplasm and the hormone–receptor complex changes which proteins the cell makes; one of these, lipocortin, inhibits phospholipase A2, the first step of prostaglandin and leukotriene production [2]. Isoflupredone lacks selectivity for glucocorticoid over mineralocorticoid effects [2].

Key safety points

  • Increases the risk of severe hypokalaemia — stop treatment if signs appear [2][1].
  • May induce the first stage of parturition in the last trimester of pregnancy [1].
  • Do not use in calves to be processed for veal or in horses intended for human consumption [1].

The usual intramuscular dose for cattle is 10 to 20 mg, according to the size of the animal and severity of the condition.

Glucocorticoid-specific receptors in the cell cytoplasm bind with steroid ligands to form hormone-receptor complexes
