About amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (the active ingredient)

Penicillin antibiotic with a β-lactamase inhibitor.

How it works

Amoxicillin is bactericidal and inhibits the biosynthesis of cell-wall mucopeptide; clavulanic acid inhibits β-lactamase enzymes and so extends amoxicillin's spectrum [1].

Key safety points

  • Contraindicated in animals with a history of allergy to any penicillin or cephalosporin [1].
