Cefoperazone is a third-generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of activity [1][2]. In the EU it is used for intramammary treatment of clinical mastitis in lactating cattle [1].

- Class: Third-generation cephalosporin (beta-lactam) antibacterial
- Brands: Gardplus

## Dose by species

## Uses

- Intramammary treatment of clinical mastitis in lactating cattle — 250 mg cefoperazone sodium per infected quarter once, or 100 mg cefoperazone dihydrate per quarter twice 24 hours apart (EU) [1].

## Mechanism of action

As a beta-lactam, it inhibits the penicillin-binding proteins and so bacterial cell wall synthesis [3]. Biliary elimination of newer cephalosporins such as cefoperazone may be appreciable [2].

## Safety

- Hypersensitivity reactions have occurred with cephalosporins, with cross-reactivity to penicillin allergies possible [2].
- Cephalosporin injections IM can be painful, and repeated IV administration may lead to local phlebitis [2].
